Refugees from the ongoing war in Syria face constant hardship and struggle as they attempt to build a new life abroad. Raghad, a Syrian refugee in Cairo, has experienced her share of pain and suffering. Raghad had been married for 40 days when her husband was killed by a missile strike while out walking in the streets in Damascus. Deciding they could no longer stay in Syria, her family sought refuge in Egypt. Over time, her father Ayman struggled to make ends meet. Unable to support his family, he made the perilous decision to attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Egypt to Europe with the help of smugglers. Caught and detained by the Egyptian Coast Guard, Raghad’s family remain in Egypt. A talented artist, Raghad’s drawings are both therapeutic and ambitious – she hopes one day to become a successful fashion designer. “A person draws either reality or fiction. I draw things I miss, things I’ve lost, and things I need.” Raghad, a young Syrian refugee living in Egypt.

Batoul is a mother of five children, one of whom, Ahmed, has a critical heart condition, In 2012 she was forced to flee Aleppo with her whole family for Egypt. In Egypt, her husband Mahmoud couldn’t make ends meet and being unable to support his family, left by sea. He eventually ended up in Sweden. Alone, in debt and having to take every decision on her own, Batoul had to face her new life. Batoul wishes her husband was here to help her with some of the important decisions she has to make on her own. She joined the cooking program at Souryat Women’s Centre, which helped her generate a small income to support herself and her family. “When I worked at the association many people liked the food my colleagues and I cooked. They liked it so much and people who visited the centre started to place orders.” Batoul is slowly finding her way as a refugee single mother in a strange country, But some things even the most determined cannot change. In Egypt Batoul searched for the very best treatment for Ahmed’s heart; eventually managing to have him seen by one of the country’s very best heart surgeons – Magdi Yacoub in Aswan. It was the best chance she could give him, sadly though even Yacoub was unable to help. Souryat Association is a Syrian community centre working under the umbrella of Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR) – one of UNHCR’s partners. Souryat Association provides support to Syrian women and children through different recreational activities and awareness sessions, and has made an important difference in the day to day life of hundreds of women and children refugees. Services are available for women, men, girls and boys. UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution. Since 1950, UNHCR has helped tens of millions of people find safety and rebuild their lives. With your support, UNHCR can restore hope for many more. Syrian children left with no choice but to eat BREAD CRUMBS from the floor. What kind of society do we live in today? With the wealth and technology we have why is there even poverty in existence ? They tight us to Beleive that you need poor people in order to make the world go around!!! That's capitalist bullshit!!! Wallahi we would rather waste our money on nonsense and throw away our food than give to the poor!!! Why? It's because we have been trained and brainwashed to play the role in keeping the poor the poor and the rich richer!

Life After Syria is a new documentary in which Syrian refugees recount their stories of survival and explores the role that other nations must now bear in alleviating their suffering. More than 5 million registered refugees have fled Syria, while another 6.3 million Syrians remain displaced within the country, around 4.7 million of whom are in are in hard-to-reach or besieged areas. Presently 29 nations in the Middle East, Europe and elsewhere are sheltering Syrian refugees. Some smaller countries in the region, such as Kuwait, have made a big difference to relief efforts in affected areas. For example, the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has helped raise more than $20bn for international humanitarian agencies to support Syrian refugees.

Follow the incredible story of nine year old Syrian refugee Mahmoud. In 2012, Mahmoud and his family fled their hometown of Aleppo, in Syria, as civil war raged in the country. They settled in Egypt, renting a small flat in the suburbs of Cairo. Not long afterwards though, with the huge unrest in the country and subsequent removal of President Mohamed Morsi, public opinion turned against Syrians seeking refuge in Egypt. Mahmoud became the victim of bullies and was physically attacked. Afraid and unable to attend school, the young boy refused to leave his family's apartment. "I wanted to leave because there is no school here and I don't have friends," Mahmoud said in 2013."They hit me all the time." Mahmoud's father Mohamed Farid also saw no future for his eldest child in Egypt and eventually took the harrowing decision to put his son on an illegal boat to Italy, alone. "No one sends their son out into the world alone unless they live in real fear. Our lives are too difficult here." However, the boat Mahmoud took was fired upon before it even left Egyptian waters. The young boy then spent the next five days in a detention centre without his family. When he returned to Cairo the bullying resumed but he remained resolute. "I have a dream that one day we will have a new house in a better place. I will go to school and make new friends," the incredible young boy declared. Raghad came with her family to Egypt after the situation in Syria became impossible to endure. She was married for only 40 days, of which she spent only one week in her house. Thereafter the family had to move a lot in Syria due to the lack of security and shelling. "I was shocked when my parents informed me about the death of my husband," Raghad sadly recalled. "I could have imagined losing anything but him. I lost hope which is the most basic thing that makes a person feel alive. He was my source of strength." When her parents decided to come to Egypt she explained, "I did not object because I knew that this was the best thing considering the circumstances we were living in." However, it was not easy for her. "I loved Egypt. I used to see Egyptian movies and always thought that Egypt is beautiful," she reminisced." I had wished to visit Egypt as a tourist with the possibility of going back to my country whenever I want...but not as a refugee." "Sometimes when I look at what is happening in Syria I think that we will never have the possibility to return. I hope we could one day go back to Syria and rebuild it again". Egypt is a major refugee host country. Many are from Syria. The numbers of Syrian and other asylum seekers continue to mount, putting a strain on the resources of the government and agencies such as UNHCR. Many refugees hope for resettlement. UNHCR Egypt submits some 6,700 refugees for resettlement to third countries on a yearly basis. This offers a lasting solution for the most vulnerable refugees, as well as those who have specific protection concerns in Egypt. For millions of Syrian refugees, their treasured memories of home have been distilled down to just a few items. Small keepsakes that remind them of the everything they were forced to abandon when the war drove them from their homeland. TRT World's Melinda Nucifora has been meeting refugees on the Greek island of Lesvos.
