The licensing of seven bus companies to resume night operations after months in the cold has seen towns whose economies had been hit by the travel ban slowly come back to life after 5 months of a lull. Most of the bus operators have welcomed the resumption of night operations but will have to maintain high standards to keep their special night travel licences. Judy Kosgei reports.

So has the night travel ban on public service vehicles been lifted or not? The ministry of transport has dismissed claims by Kenya Country Bus Owners Association that the high court has lifted the ban. But the bus owners maintain that the courts indeed lifted the ban after the ministry failed to consult stake holders within the 60 day period issued by the court. Esther Kahumbi reports.

Bus operators have moved to court to challenge the new regulations on night travel saying they are unconstitutional and hurting their business. This the latest twist in a tussle to introduce regulation in the night travel business. The operators argue that they were not given opportunity to demonstrate that they were licenced to operate at night as per the law. The operators moved to court even as transport cabinet secretary engineer Michael Kamau maintained the new regulations will be implemented to the letter.

A directive by the government banning public service vehicles from operating at night has not only seen owners of affected vehicles suffer losses but also business persons who use the same to transport their wares. Traders plying long routes say they have incurred massive expenses as they are forced to spend nights in hotels or sleeping in buses waiting for daybreak. The ban was imposed on Christmas after 18 people perished in a road accident involving two buses that collided at night. Sally Mbilu reports.
