I had a lot of scrap hardwood flooring from our home renovations, so I found some really beautiful pieces and got to work. Most of the sword is made from left over cumaru teak flooring that I recently used in our house. It has a really beautiful grain pattern and some elegant figuring, plus it's extremely dense and hard. I had just finished watching Alec Steele's series on making a Damascus steel katana, so I had a rough idea on how the whole thing went together. First, I drew out the rough shape of the blade based on some online dimensions. I cut out this shape on the bandsaw making sure to leave a tang on the bottom that would fit inside the hilt. I rough sanded the blade to give the sword some definition and moved on to the tsuba, or hand guard. I found another smaller piece of teak flooring for the tsuba. I used some calipers to measure the tang dimensions and transferred those lines to the blank tsuba. I drilled out this space and had to chisel and file the pocket very carefully so that the blade tang would sit snuggly into it. After I had a good fit, I cut the tsuba into an oval using a paper template. After researching how katana hilts are wrapped in cotton or silk strips, I decided to recreate that look with an inlayed contrasting wood. I had a piece of scrap oak flooring from my boys' room which would look awesome against the teak hilt. While I worked on other projects, I had my friend Josh CNC out the hilt design and the resulting diamond pattern looked just like a traditional fabric wrap. I hogged out the inside of the hilt to receive the tang and once I got a snug fit, it was time to assemble the major components. The tsuba fit onto the tang and the tang fit into the hilt. I added a kashira or pommel to the end of the hilt and it was all done. I finished the katana with some linseed oil and beeswax polish and it looks gorgeous! I am so happy to have my own sword and I feel like a true samurai! If you liked this woodworking prop, check out the playlist above for more!
Chainsaw Sculpture: Making a Stool From a Log
9 years ago
http://peplers.blogspot.com/2008/12/making-stool.html This video shows you how to use a chainsaw to make a one-piece stool from a log, no nails, screws glue or joints required. It also doubles as a small saw bench! I can't claim to have invented this myself though, I learned it while doing the NPTC CS31 chainsaw and tree felling training course with David Rossney of Esus Forestry. Be warned, this guzzles fuel - I can get two stools made from one tank. It's also good to start with a sharp chain, as there's a lot of cutting to do. Obviously I need to say here that you shouldn't be using a chainsaw unless you've had some training, either from an official trainer or a forestry expert you happen to know. Also, you should have all the protective equipment - chainsaw trousers and boots, gloves, helmet, visor and ear defenders. Watch a timelapse video of making a stool here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTw0YRnMXtM Have fun making stools!

10 Ideas Of What To Do With Some Sawdust [17]
I generate a lot of sawdust as part of my joinery business. Most of it ends up in the bin but here are a few ideas of what sawdust can be used for! A few fairly obvious pointers: 1. If you generate sawdust on an industrial scale this probably won't be much use - these tips are more for small workshops and home / DIY users. 2. If the wood has been treated with something poisonous you're probably best putting it straight in the bin. 3. If the wood has been treated with something poisonous don't eat it. If you've got any more ideas of how to make use of workshop sawdust pop it in the comments - thanks for watching and don't forget to Subscribe! Woodworking Projects - Unique Birch End Table
8 years ago
My next woodworking project: I always wanted to do something with burled wood. I very rarely get my hands on it. This large Birch stump had one large burl and several smaller ones on it. Instead of cutting them out and discarding the rest of the log, I wanted to integrate them all in one object. The stump itself has many interesting cavities and depressions in it, so I felt it would do the tree injustice if I only took the burls. The wood has tons of beautiful features, like black lines from spalting, green and red spots from other fungi, brown streaks from pieces of cambium, leftover pieces of bark and the chaotic burl grain. When I applied the first coat of oil, my jaw dropped to the floor, I never could have dreamed it would look this good (you can see that later on in the vid) This table was made in Hortus Haren, Netherlands.
